Description

With our series, I Connect, we are exploring the importance of the church.

Church connects us to God and to others.

Our Attitude towards Our Church

  • Without the right attitude, we submit to legalistic guidelines, become frustrated, burn out
  • With right attitude, going and doing becomes natural, joyous, you will enjoy church

The right attitude means we recognize that no church is perfect.  But we connect (go, serve, worship…) anyway!

TEXT:  Acts 2:37-47

37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”

38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation.”

41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.

42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.

43 Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.

44 Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common,

45 and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need.

46 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart,

47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.

Acts 2:46-47 HCSB

Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple complex, and broke bread from house to house. They ate their food with a joyful and humble attitude, praising God and having favor with all the people. And every day the Lord added to them those who were being saved.

Notice these things…

  • They devoted themselves to this practice.
  • They were joyful.
  • They had humble attitudes.
  • They had favor with all the people.

We should not “go to church” to get our self-centered needs met.  Instead we go to worship the one true God as we serve alongside other believers.

The Church is God’s prized possession.  He paid for the church with the blood of His Son.

Acts 20:28

Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.

Ekklesia

Ek – The origin, point from which motion or action proceeds

Kaleo – To call, to urge on

“To receive revelation, apply it or move forward” Repeat!

Acts 2:41-42

41 Then those who gladly received his word [Ek] [then moved forward] were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.

42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.

One of the reasons why churches are not growing today is because they don’t know the mission or purpose of the church.  Our mission is not to grow the church.  Our mission is to reach out to the community.  If we reach the community then the church will grow.  That is the mission.

Every church should be a purpose driven church… however, some churches are driven by:

  • Traditions
  • Personalities
  • Finances
  • Programs
  • Buildings
  • Events
  • Crisis
  • Works
  • FAD’s
  • Mission

Why do we need to be a purpose driven church?

1.  It Builds Morale

Proverbs 29:18 Where there is no vision, the people perish:  but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.

2.  It Reduces Frustration

Isaiah 26:3 You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.

3.  It Allows Concentration

4.  It Attracts Cooperation

5.  It Assists in Evaluation

Knowing the purpose becomes a ruler or standard to measure what we are doing by.
