Independence Day

July 4th is a special holiday to Americans.  We gather together, grill, swim, fellowship, and numerous other activities celebrating the signing of the Declaration of Independence.  With that document, the leadership of our forefathers, along with the blood, sweat, tears, loss-of-life of the Continental Army… we are a free nation.  We are a sovereign nation. Our freedom, however, was not free.  Many lost their lives in the process and have loss it trying to ensure that we can continue to live free.

As America was set free from the rule of Great Britain, Jesus came to set us free from the tyranny of sin and from the evil grasp of the devil.  He tells us in John 8:32 that the truth will set us free and in verse 36 that the Son will make us free, indeed.

Many people today are under some sort of bondage.  And some sit on church pews every Sunday morning.  A person in bondage, a slave, cannot live a full life. Ultimately, they are not able to reach their purpose and destiny that God created them to fulfill because they are being restrained.

The good news is that we can be free, that we don’t have to live in bondage.  Jesus sets us free from more than drugs and alcohol but also from things we don’t like to mention – bitterness, unforgiveness, greed, worry, and so on.

Whatever you are facing today that is keeping you from moving forward in pursuing your God-given destiny, lay it down at the cross of Jesus.  He will help you overcome.  Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 12:9, “‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”
